Gray 's sightseeing Service

London June 6th 2012

After a very early start this morning 2.30 for me and 4.30 for Simon we headed off for a local breakfast at a corner cafe in Camden. We then headed onto the Big Bus company hop on hop off bus around London visiting such things along the way as the Royal Courts of Justice where the Rupert Murdoch enquiry was held, The Tower of London where we hopped off and jumped on the boat cruise along the River Thames visiting Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey (refer to Leanne's pictures even though we weren't together we obviously viewed the same sites) . We then headed onto Buckingham Palace and was very disappointed as it was all blocked off due to the Queens jubilee and recent concert We then jumped back on the bus and went through the wealthy parts of London which included the Intercontinental Hotel where our fellow travellers are resting their weary heads......., the Ritz, Park Lane and then into a chaotic Oxford Street. Simon had to hold me back from jumping overboard and doing what I do best "shopping". Tomorrows another day...... Our final resting place was Picadilly Circus where we jumped off the bus and joined the masses in the underground all heading home from work. Tonight we will head to one of the many local corner pubs for a drink and pub meal - that's what you do when in London isn't it??

Out and about in London

Sightseeing

Woke up at 5 this morning! Took the tube to the London eye. (Not at 5!). The queue was long but it moved pretty quickly and it took around 30 mins to do the full rotation. It was a nice view over London and we managed to get some good photos. Visited Trafalger Square, Leicester Square and the National Portrait gallery to see the Queens exhibition. Lunch of yummy lentil soup at Pret. Now feeling rather seedily jet lagged and have attempted to have a nana nap, without success! Got some cheap theatre tickets, so off to see Sweeny Todd tonight.

London

London

A drama filled morning at Hong Kong airport. The flight upgrade I won at the flight centre expo had not been linked to the HK check in computer. Very stressful all round with Martyn having to make multiple calls to Air NZ and the Flight centre. They said we had to pay an extra $3500, not what we were counting on!! Finally got sorted 10 mins before the flight. We had to be escorted through customs to make boarding time. Not that happy with airnz at the moment. However, we finally made it onboard and it was like pure luxury after cattle class.!! Sylvia loved it and made the most of the wine and even sung out loud to "Adele" when she had her headphones on!! Will be back to reality on the flight home though. Amanda and Joanne , John and Isabella were at the airport to meet us. We had a quick drink in the pub, and are now in the hotel. Sylvia has gone down to Devon with Joanne. Looking forward to seeing Amandas work, flat etc in the next few days and meeting up with Martyns old school friend from Ireland. Lx

Just popped over to London to visit the Queen......

After an early start departing Hong Kong for London, not without drama I might add (ask Leanne if you want to know more) Martyn, Simon and I were given our upgrades to premium economy and Leanne and Aunty pretended to be ladies in business/first class!!!! After 13.5 hours flying we landed in London being met at Heathrow by Amanda (Leanne and Martyn's daughter now living here) and Aunty Sylvia's daughter, husband and Isabella their daughter. We are separating for 3 days - Simon and I doing the sites of London ( as it is my first time ever to London) and Leanne and Martyn catching up with Amanda and friends. It is now after 3 am Hong Kong time, just after 8 London time and I really need to get some sleep so the bloodshot eyes can rest!!! We are staying in a lovely very tiny one room apartment in West London - caught the underground to Kings Cross station and got drenched walking from the station to the apartment !! Just another part of our adventure...... And Italy watch out we are on our way - watch this space. More pics to follow .......

Lantau Island

Lantau Island

It has been a whirlwind last few days in Hong Kong. Today we took a trip to Lantau Island , home of the giant buddha. It took about 25 minutes by cable car, with spectacular views back over Hong Kong and then up over the mountains. I have to say, it was quite some height. We arrived at the village of Ngong Ping, and after a quick walk around there, we were taken by bus to the buddha. It was an impressive sight towering over the village, high on the hill. We then visited the Po Lin Monastery. After that we headed to the village of Tai O, an ancient fishing village. It was real eye opener to see the tiny houses on stilts along the waters edge, still inhabited today by the local fishermen and families. We strolled through the village and saw all sorts of weird and wonderful dried seafoods. The favourite would have to be fish bladders. There was a definite fishy smell about the place, and so different to anything we might come across in NZ. I don't think Robyn will be rushing back there in a hurry........see facial expressions on photos!! The houses the village people live in were absolutely tiny. It certainly makes you think about how we live in NZ, a paradise really. It was a long day, and the humidity was quite draining. We finally got back around 7pm, and headed off to local chinese restaurant. Just to top off the day, we were all seated at the table before realising the extremely over priced menu. Robyn and Simon scarpered at a quick pace, leaving me to deal with the grumpy hostess. Hong Kong is a city of contrasts. The city is modern and metropolitan and yet the housing seems old and many apartments run down. The average apartment size is 30 sq metres.!! So it is goodbye for now HK, and hello London tomorrow. Lx
