We left early this morning from our bnb on the hill in Positano. None of us were sad to say goodbye to Pepe, the grumpy host!! His views were stunning but his brash manner made his customer service crap! Martyn and Simon had to once again carry our large suitcases up the ever present steps to the bus stop! Martyn has even resorted to carrying the bags like the Sherpas of the Himalayas!....on the shoulder. Robyn, Simon and I are all suffering today after walking the 2000 steps yesterday, particularly Robyn and I who are getting around like a pair of old ladies! Anyway, we caught the ferry to Capri, a short 35 minute ride. On arrival we caught one of the open topped cabs that are all over the island. We are staying in Ana Capri, which is away from the main area. After lunch we had a quick walk around the shopping area and to the lookout to get some photos.......just to add a few more. The island is beautiful, the usual crystal clear waters that seem to bless the parts of Italy we have been to. It doesn't seem to have as many of the old buildings as Tuscany and Amalfi, although we havent seen a lot as yet. It seems to be a mecca for the rich, with huge launches filling the harbour. We spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool at a neighbouring hotel. Tomorrow we are off on a tour of the island. With only 3 days to go now, we are trying not to think of all this coming to an inevitable end!! Ciao, Lx

Amalfi Coast and the Grotto

Sailing on the high seas!

We were up early this morning to catch the first bus to Positano to go on the coastal and grotto ferry tour. Unfortunately, the first bus had already left so we had to walk the looonnngg walk down the hill from Nocelle all the way to Positano. A grand total of 2000 steps ! However we made it and we were soon on the boat whizzing along the beautiful Amalfi coast. It was interesting to see all the villages and lovely little bays and coves tucked in all along the coastline. We arrived at the “grotto” . 5euros each to get in. It was a rip off I’m afraid.! We all piled into a small boat and floated around inside a cave for about 5 minutes…….mmmm, not a glow worm in sight. The lovely Italian man then escorted us off the boat and stood there with his hand out ready for tips!! No such luck!! Robyn and I avoided eye contact. Then it was back to Positano for lunch. We spent the afternoon basking in the sun and folicking in the sea…lol. What a shame our tans will be unseen back in NZ. Tonight is our last night here, off to Capri tomorrow. The thought of dragging those suitcases up all those steps is quite daunting. Just as well we have the incredible hulks with us!! Cia, Lx

Beautiful Positano

Fun in the sun

This morning we had a lovely breakfast on the deck with gorgeous views from the heavens. After Simon did his washing in the bidet….gross, we caught the local bus down the hill to the township of Positano. It appears that Positano is the home of linen, cotton, lemons and ceramics. These products filled the many tiny shops scattered around. After a bit of shopping it was time for a swim. The water was absolutely beautiful, crystal clear and warm, but refreshing. It was 25 euros to hire the shaded deck chair so we didn’t bother with that, just roughed it on the stones! We had a lovely lunch. Simon and I had mussel soup , lovely but the mussels were not quite the same size as our jumbo green lipped ones.! Martyn and I decided to walk around to the next bay, but on the way discovered a beautiful little alcove with very few people. We stayed there, enjoying the water for most of the afternoon. We took the bus back up the hill. It was incredible how many people one small bus can hold, we were jam packed in sweating like pigs. It is still very hot, and hard to cope with at times as it seems Italians are not into air conditioning or even fans.! Tonight we wandered down the lane to a lovely little pizzeria, set into a cave in the hills. So unique, and yummy food too. Then, it was back up the multiple steps to home. With all these steps and the heat the weight should be falling off,…mmm…….but I fear not. Perhaps we will have to do the 2000 steps down the hill to the beach tomorrow and flag the bus.!!

Chinese Italian and the trip to Amalfi

The long and winding road.....

Ciao , from the top of the world.!!
To celebrate our last night in Tuscany we decided to have a change of food! We are all full up on Pizza and Pasta. We found a lovely little Chinese restaurant in Poggibonsi with Italian speaking chinese staff. The food was delicious , although very small servings, about the size of saucers. I think by the end of the night we had ordered about 20.....goodness knows what they thought. Robyn and I enjoyed our wine and sang Pokare kare ana to celebrate our kiwiananess in Italy...lol. It was very sad to say goodbye to our wonderful friends Claudia and Rudi. They really were amazing hosts, so welcoming to all. We had a photo session by the very American Carole, who "just loves people" and taking constant photos. We left at the crack of dawn this morning to drive to Florence. The boys dropped Robyn and I off at Mcdonalds to wait with the bags while they returned the rental car. Just as well we allowed plenty of time, in true Italian style everything took forever. We boarded the train for our 4 hour journey to Amalfi. On arrival in Solerno, we soon discovered that the trip to our bnb was a lot longer and more expensive than anticipated. We decided to get a taxi for the 40 km trip to the our tiny village overlooking Positano. The trip was hair raising to say the least. Forty kms of windy road in a cab with a mad driver requires medication! He thought my near screaming in the back seat was hilarious!! He drove like the wind , overtaking on every corner on the tiny roads. We seemed to go up forever. I cant even begin to describe the views......absolutely stunning!! So, now we are here, in a tiny traditional Italian bed and breakfast with our new hosts Pepe and Geraldina.....not sure how Pepe is yet. Simon and I both been told off so far!! It feels like we are on top of the world, in fact we are so high we are in the clouds. It is stinking hot again today (40's). There is no pool here, and a 25 min bus trip to the beach, down from the heavens!! However, that is where we will no doubt be heading tomorrow. Enjoy pics. Ciao for now. Lx
